Hosted e-Commerce
Big Commerce is a hosted e-commerce solution which means that the shopping cart software is hosted by the vendor. You only pay a monthly fee for using the software so there are no additional costs. Conventional e-commerce solutions often require you to have software installed on your own web server. Another benefit is that as long as you subscribe to the hosted solution all software updates are included. It means that you will always have the most recent version and fixes available.
One of the greatest selling points for Big Commerce is that you, already in the Bronze version, get access to all the features – the limiting factor is the number of products you can add on the basic level.
Any drawbacks? The only drawback is that Big Commerce gives us only limited access to the software code and no access to the database so if you need a lot of modifications there are limits to what can be done. Due to the cost of ownership Big Commerce is suitable for either a start up or small company with less than 100 products or a company with high turnover wanting to keep site maintenance and upgrade costs at a minimum.
