Search Engine Optimisation

I am always asked about SEO. Questions that can be difficult to answer since the SEO approach can be different depending on your market and industry. There are however a few basics that should be taken into consideration. I have planned to write this for a while but when reading the recent issue of Web Designer and I noticed they had done it for me. So to make sure that I am not done for copyright infringement here is the source: Issue 180 of web designer magazine (ip) (www.webdesignermag.co.uk). Here is an edited version of their excellent summary:

  1. CONTENT.Up-to-date and pertinent content is essential for a good ranking. We will add 2 pages per month during the agreement.
  2. METATAGS. Meta tags found in the source code of your header. The keyword tag are key search terms that users will use to search for. The description tag should be a keyword packed sentence describing the purpose of the site.
  3. PAGE TITLE. This will be displayed in the search result and it is one of the first elements seen by a search engine.
  4. HEADER TAGS. H1 is typically used for page titles and is considered the most important.
  5. ALT ATTRIBUTES. The alt attribute is used to apply text description to images. This adds relevant text to the source code and it also offers better accessibility to users. If an image is not present at text description is shown instead.
  6. TITLE ATTRIBUTE. The title attribute is used to add extra information and is applied to text or images. It is used as an alternative/companion to the alt attribute.
  7. SITEMAP. Sitemaps are an effective method of informing Google about the pages in a site.
  8. LINKS. Links can be an effective way of increase a site's visibility. Avoid link directories, artificial link building and make sure links are relevant.
  9. URLS. Search engine friendly URLs should contain keywords relevant to the content on the page. E.g. www.olango.net/e-commerce.html
  10. SOCIAL MEDIA. Not typical SEO but the use of Twitter and Facebook has a role to play in getting a site seen.
